We have lots of activities taking place all through the week at The Brain Charity’s base on Norton Street in Liverpool. They are free to attend for anyone affected by a neurological condition as well as their family and carers.

Arts and Crafts at The Brain Charity

The Brain Charity offers a range of different arts and crafts activities to people with a neurological condition and to their family, friends and carers.


Regular art classes are held on a Thursday afternoon in partnership with Liverpool City Council's Adult Education Service. The art class uses different painting techniques such as painting with acrylics, watercolours and oils.  Please check our online calendar for details of the next course.

Craft Club

One of the most popular activities at The Brain Charity is the weekly craft club which is held every Tuesday. Volunteer-led and free to attend, it has more than 20 members who meet once a week to take part in many different projects, including quilting, knitting, crochet and sewing. The craft club produced a quilt which was exhibited at the 2015 quilt convention. However, the craft club is not just about being creative; it provides an opportunity to meet others in a safe and supportive environment and make new friends. Items that are made during craft club are sometimes donated to the charity to sell to raise funds.

boccia at the brain charityIt's like indoor bowls and it's pronounced 'box-yer'.

Boccia is a sport that first started in Ancient Greece (so it's been around a while!) and has now become a Paralympic sport, played by people with neurological conditions. People of all ages and abilities can take part and the game is played in a seated position.

The sport is similar to bowls, but played with light-weight leather balls. The aim is to propel different coloured balls so that they land as closely as possible to a white ball called the 'jack'. You can propel your ball by throwing or kicking it, and if that's not right for you there's also a device that works like a chute that you can use to aim your ball. The game can be played individually, in pairs or teams of three - we tend to play it in teams as it's a lot more fun!

Boccia can help improve your co-ordination and motor skills, and aid concentration. It's a great way of socialising and you don't need any specialist equipment or sports gear to take part. Just wear something comfortable and we’ll provide everything else. Sessions are free and as it's always popular we advise that you book your place on 0151 298 2999. Carers are more than welcome to come along too.

Arts and Crafts at The Brain CharityOur very popular craft club meets every Tuesday 10.30 - midday. We have lots of different crafts for you to try including sewing, embroidery, mosaic-making, knitting, and card-making - the list is endless and we always welcome new ideas from club members.

Craft club is a great opportunity to meet new people in a relaxed and welcoming environment. There's no pressure to complete projects, and there's plenty of help available from our craft leader if you're just starting out. Beginners are very welcome as are experienced crafters, we thoroughly believe in teaching and supporting each other and it's probably one of our noisiest weekly activities with all the chatting and laughter that goes on!

Lots of crafters have said that working on craft projects helps with hand-to-eye co-ordination and fine-motor skills and that many new friendships have been made. Craft club members often stay on to enjoy lunch at our café afterwards so they can continue their conversations!

Being Active: An every day guide for people living with an impairment or health conditionThere are lots of reasons why a bit of physical exercise is good for you! You don't have to run a marathon, but it is important to do some exercise to keep healthy - and just a little bit every day will help you. Washing the car, doing some gardening, or taking the dog for a walk is all really good exercise.

We've all supposed to do half an hour's exercise, most days, if we can. You don't have to do it all in one go - you could always do that half an hour in three ten-minute chunks.

Make sure you choose a form of exercise that suits you - it might be walking, or doing housework - something you can just do at home. Talk to you doctor if you're not sure. Start off slowly and build up the amount of exercise as you get used to it.

Regular exercise is good for your heart and circulation, so it reduces the risk of stroke and of dementia. Exercise improves brain function, memory and concentration - it keeps your brain sharp. Amazingly, physical exercise even makes the part of your brain grow that is to do with memory and learning.

Your brain needs a healthy supply of blood to work properly, and exercise really improves your circulation.

And exercise can help you manage pain by releasing those feel-good hormones - which improve your mood as well. Exercise has been shown to reduce stress and depression, triggering the hormones that work as your body's natural anti-depressants.

As many people are ‘shielding’ from coronavirus and not able to meet together in person just now, The Brain Charity has moved many of our activities online.

All of our online activities are free to attend and open to anyone affected by a neurological condition.

Here are some of our regular events:

Chair-based yoga

Loosen up & relax with our bi-weekly, chair-based yoga sessions with Synergy Dance Outreach. Fully accessible, suitable for all abilities and guaranteed to help you forget about some of the stresses of lockdown. Held: every other Wednesday from 2pm-3pm, starting on November 11th.


Hour-long sessions hosted by The Rehab Physio that focus on Pilates to relieve pain. This is a gentle but deeply effective way to improve mobility and keep your body active during lockdown. Held: every Thursday from 2.30pm-3.30pm, starting on November 12th.

Craft club

Anyone who took part in Emily's fabulous paper bunting session at Head Matters Online will know how fun online craft sessions can be. Join her to learn how to make some beautiful things out of paper to brighten up your home or gift to friends and family. Held: every other Wednesday from 11am-12pm, starting on November 18th.

Get your body moving and heart pumping with feel-good, chair-based accessible dance with Leila from Travelled Companions. Learn a variety of dances to a wide range of different types of music. Held: Every Friday from 1pm-2pm, starting on November 13th.

Hat making

Learn how to make everything from bonnets to tiaras with Denise Innes-Spencer from The British School of Millinery. All materials needed for these classes will be mailed out to participants, free of charge, each week, meaning places are limited – so please book now! Held: Every Tuesday from 1pm-3pm, starting on November 17th.

Cosmetics making

Create your own natural cosmetics and bath products to treat yourself at home with live video workshops hosted by Tony. Participants will learn how to make oatmeal and lavender bath soak, a rose clay mask, strengthening hair mask and more. All genders encouraged – everyone deserves to feel pampered! Capacity for this course is limited as we will arrange for free delivery of the materials, so let us know ASAP if you’d like to attend.
Held: Every Thursday from 1pm-2pm, starting on November 12th.


Be kind to yourself by making time to come along to our online mindfulness classes with wellbeing facilitator Tom. These sessions focus on finding ways to keep a healthy state of mind during the coronavirus pandemic and offer a comfortable space to join with others for practice. The group is open to everyone – it’s suitable for beginners or those who have already tried some mindfulness. Held: Every Monday from 1pm-2pm.

Tai Chi

Originally developed in 13th century China as a martial art, Tai chi is now practised around the world for its health benefits. This exercise class run by Daphne combines deep breathing and relaxation with gentle flowing movements. Held: Every Monday from 2pm-3pm

Virtual coffee mornings

Our virtual coffee mornings provide the usual mix of advice, fun and friendship that you'll find at our regular monthly coffee mornings in at The Brain Charity, but in a fortnightly online chat room.

As well as providing you with any information you might need, these friendly, relaxed groups are a good place to catch up with news and find out about what's coming up at The Brain Charity too.

Virtual coffee mornings are on the first and third Monday of the month from 10.30-11.30 a.m.

Shared reading group

Our online shared reading group offers everyone the chance to enjoy a good yarn from the comfort of their own home. Just grab a brew and drop in in to one of our regular Monday lunchtime meet ups.

The way shared reading works is that the group leader reads out a short story, poem or part of a play and then we discuss the thoughts and feelings it sparks in us. Our group leader, from the reader organisation, is expert in cultivating a safe, creative space where each member feels valued, energised and listened to.

You won’t be expected to read out loud and there's no homework or advance preparation required - you just login* and take part on the day.

Shared reading is on Mondays from 12.30-13.30 p.m.

There are hundreds of thousands of people affected by neurological conditions and because they understand exactly what it feels like, you can be sure that when you come in to see us you will be greeted with a warm welcome, a non-judgemental smile and a lovely friendly atmosphere.

It might be that you are fed up with being indoors all the time and want to get out a bit more or perhaps that you fancy trying out something new.

Whatever the reason you decide to come along and see us, just knowing that you are in the same boat as others and that you can lean on each other for support, can, in itself give you a massive boost.

And you never know, you could meet a new friend for life.

These mornings are a great chance to get out and about. The building is fully accessible with disabled parking spaces and all facilities at ground level. There's also a lift to the first floor library should you want to visit it afterwards. It's all very relaxed and informal with free refreshments, snacks and interesting guest speakers, there's staff and volunteers on hand as well to offer advice and information if you require it. You can come and go as you please and you don't have to stay for the whole session unless you want to. We aim to have fun and as is usual for The Brain Charity there's always lots of laughter!

Our visitors like being able to meet other people who have neurological conditions, and as one of our regulars says "it's nice to be amongst people who understand what you're going through", many friendships are made at coffee mornings and people often decide to join in other activities that the charity offers such as English and Maths classes, Confidence Building courses, Community Choir, Craft Club, and Walking Club (you can find out about these if you look at our events calendar or call us on 0151 298 2999).

You don't need to book, just come along and join in anytime between 10.30 and 12.00. Our café is open afterwards where you can buy lunch and keep on chatting with friends old and new, so come along and say hello, we know you’ll enjoy it!

The Brain Charity choir formed in February 2016 and is going from strength to strength. Anyone is welcome to come along and join in, we have a mixture of male and female members, and it's a friendly group with no pressure to sing solos - but if you're a budding Adele or Sam Smith we’d be very keen for you to have a go!

Choir practice runs 5.00-6.00pm every other Monday and there's free tea and coffee (or water) to keep those vocal cords lubricated. There's lots of laughter in between the singing and lots of friendships have been formed.

Clinical research into the benefits of singing when you have a neurological condition have shown that it can elevate your mood, improve general health and wellbeing and give your brain a good workout, thus improving your quality of life. Apart from anything else, it's really good fun and it's a great feeling when a song comes together, it's something you can be really proud of.

No need to book just turn up, you'll be assured of a warm welcome!

Delicious Food at The Brain Charity Café

Update, March 1st 2021:

The Brain Charity’s centre on Norton Street will formally reopen to the public in limited numbers on Monday, April 12th..

The Brain Food Café will begin serving takeaway food and drinks on this date. Social distancing must be adhered to and masks must be worn when entering the building unless you have a medical exemption.

From Monday, May 17th, The Brain Food Café will reopen for table service.

Currently, our café is open for one-hour advance bookings only, from 10.30am until 2.30pm, to allow for social distancing and cleaning between customers. Lunch is served from 12 noon with drinks and snacks available before then. We are taking pre-orders from a reduced menu – including specials like scouse, cheese and onion pie and quiche – to limit food waste. Lunch classics like sandwiches, toasties and baked potatoes will all still be available.

Diners will sit at their own tables, spaced at least one metre apart, and hand sanitiser is provided upon arrival.

We will be offering sandwiches, jacket potatoes, brunch dishes and the delicious daily specials you’ve missed.

Walking is a great way to exercise - it's free, ideal for people of all ages and fitness levels, and one of the easiest ways to become more active and healthier. Regular walking has been shown to reduce the risk of illnesses like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, asthma, stroke, and some cancers.

The Brain Charity's walking group

Walking in a group is a great way to start walking, make new friends, and stay motivated. Our beginners' walk is aimed at those who do little or no exercise and who want to start being more active. The pace will be gentle and the aim as always is to have fun and enjoy yourself!

If you'd like to come along, make sure you're wearing comfortable footwear and bring a waterproof just in case - we advise that you wear layers so you can warm up/cool down as you go, and make sure you bring water to stay hydrated. We will walk short distances to begin with, increasing as the group progresses.
